Overview

Etsy's UX AI Enablement team sits inside the User Experience Platform group. The team creates AI-assisted prototyping tools that help product teams move from idea to high-fidelity prototype, with strong alignment to the Design System, across web and native. As a contract Lead Front-End Software Engineer, you will build and maintain those tools in JavaScript/TypeScript and React, then help product teams adopt them.

What You'll Do6

  • Build and maintain AI-assisted prototyping tools that let designers and engineers test ideas at high fidelity while staying aligned with the Design System.
  • Lead feature work from open requirements through delivery, including scoping and technical decisions.
  • Write documentation, review pull requests, answer Slack questions, audit new features, and host office hours and classes for peers across Etsy.
  • Identify technical debt and propose work that improves the team's tools and workflows.
  • Integrate generative AI or AI-powered tooling into developer workflows and design system processes.
  • Write evals to measure and improve the quality of AI-powered tools.

Requirements5

  • Strong front-end development expertise with JavaScript/TypeScript, CSS, and React.
  • Experience creating and maintaining reusable frontend components across large product surfaces.
  • Experience building or integrating AI-powered or generative AI tooling for developer workflows or design systems.
  • Experience writing evals to measure and improve AI-powered tool quality.
  • Ability to lead projects and guide feature work when requirements are still open.

Preferred Qualifications4

  • Experience building linters or validators.
  • Experience with metric collectors tied to component usage or adoption.
  • Experience working with or building Web Components.
  • Knowledge of web accessibility standards and best practices, such as WCAP and WAI-ARIA.

Who Should Apply

The role suits a lead front-end engineer who has shipped reusable React components across large product surfaces and has hands-on experience with AI or generative AI tooling. You should be comfortable writing evals, guiding feature work with open requirements, and supporting other engineers through docs, reviews, and office hours. Web Components and accessibility knowledge help, but the source lists them as nice-to-haves.
