Overview

Mercor wants practicing chemists to shape how frontier large language models reason about real chemistry research. Your scientific judgment carries the work: you review task quality and model outputs, write problem specifications with reference solutions, and build benchmarks that show whether a model truly improves. Deep specialization in organic chemistry, physical chemistry, or a neighboring area matters more here than broad generalist coverage. The role runs fully remote for people based in the United States.

What You'll Do5

  • Review chemistry tasks and model responses, flagging implausible mechanisms, reactions that cannot run, stoichiometric or thermodynamic mistakes, and spectra read the wrong way.
  • Separate answers that sound convincing from answers that would survive peer review, then name the exact point where the reasoning fails.
  • Write tight problem statements and worked reference solutions that mirror how research chemistry actually gets done.
  • Build evaluation sets of research-level problems inside your specialty, hard enough to expose real gaps in a model.
  • Compare notes with researchers in adjacent fields so unwritten expert instincts turn into written, testable criteria.

Requirements7

  • PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Current senior research standing: faculty appointment, principal investigator, staff or senior scientist, or a similar post at a university, national laboratory, or research organization.
  • Genuine depth in one area such as organic and synthetic, physical and computational, inorganic and materials, analytical chemistry, or chemical biology.
  • A peer-reviewed publication record. Competitive fellowships or awards count in your favor.
  • Hands-on use of large language models at work, plus the judgment to spot a fluent but wrong argument.
  • Strong writing habits and feedback that stays structured, specific, and easy to act on.
  • Residence in the United States.

Who Should Apply

Practicing chemists who hold a PhD and run an active research program, whether in synthetic, computational, analytical, or materials chemistry. You already put large language models to work and can tell a sound mechanism from a polished error. Senior lab standing and a publication record outweigh generalist breadth.

Salary Insight

Pay runs from $90 to $140 per hour on an hourly engagement. That band sits near the top of expert-review rates for PhD-level chemistry consultants, and the upper end tends to match candidates with faculty or principal investigator standing.
