Overview

This contract role centers on training AI systems to interpret US tax law. You will read state-level sales and use tax statutes across multiple jurisdictions and define what a correct formal translation must contain. The work involves writing precise rubrics and scoring AI outputs against them. No prior AI experience is required. Your analytical reading of statutes matters more than any technical background.

What You'll Do7

  • 1Read and interpret sales and use tax statutes at the subsection level across US states, plus occasional federal tax provisions.
  • 2Author rubrics that turn a statutory section into a checklist of discrete, testable requirements, based solely on the law's text.
  • 3Assign severity ratings (critical, secondary, minor) to each requirement based on the statute's genuine weight.
  • 4Review AI formal translations of statutes and score them pass/fail against your rubric, verifying conditions, thresholds, AND/OR logic, and exceptions.
  • 5Write self-contained test scenarios for failed criteria, including edge cases with explicit facts, dates, amounts, and expected outcomes.
  • 6Identify and flag discrepancies, statutory exceptions, and ambiguities in the law.
  • 7Submit structured written evaluations through a digital review platform.

Requirements7

  • 1Active CPA license, Chartered Accountant designation, or experience as a US tax attorney.
  • 2Sales and use tax or broader state and local tax statutory experience is preferred.
  • 3Ability to read and interpret tax statutes and regulations, not just prepare returns.
  • 4Comfort with legal logic: conditions, thresholds, AND/OR structures, exceptions, and defined terms.
  • 5Strong written communication with precision; another reviewer should reach the same conclusion from your criteria.
  • 6High attention to detail, especially around 'except for' clauses and edge cases.
  • 7Comfort providing structured feedback through a digital review interface.

Who Should Apply

This role suits a CPA or tax attorney who enjoys dissecting statutory text at the subsection level and turning it into objective checklists. Accountants focused on compliance or advisory work will find this role less suitable. Candidates often get rejected for writing rubrics that are too vague or for failing to distinguish between essential and minor statutory points. A passion for legal language and a tolerance for repetitive, high-precision analysis are essential.

Salary Insight

The pay rate is $20-$30 per hour for contract work. No additional benefits are mentioned; the exact rate is discussed during the hiring process.
