Overview

This contract role puts your tax expertise to work training AI systems to interpret sales and use tax statutes. You will read tax law across multiple state jurisdictions, break each section into precise testable requirements, and score an AI's formal translation against your rubric. No prior AI experience is needed; the focus is on your ability to read a statute and extract every condition, threshold, and exception. The work happens remotely on a digital review platform, with compensation at $65-$70 per hour.

What You'll Do7

  • 1Read and interpret sales and use tax statutes and regulations from various US states, including some federal provisions, down to the subsection level.
  • 2Build scoring rubrics that break a statute into a checklist of discrete requirements the AI's translation must meet, based strictly on the law's text and independent of the AI's output.
  • 3Assign each requirement a severity level (critical, secondary, or minor) according to its actual legal weight, avoiding the temptation to mark everything as critical.
  • 4Evaluate the AI's formal translation of a statute against your rubric, marking it pass or fail while verifying that conditions, thresholds, AND/OR logic, and exceptions are correctly captured.
  • 5Write clear, self-contained test scenarios for failed criteria, including edge cases with explicit facts, dates, amounts, and expected outcomes.
  • 6Flag discrepancies, statutory exceptions, and genuine ambiguities in the law as you encounter them.
  • 7Submit structured written evaluations through the digital review platform, ensuring your feedback is precise enough for another reviewer to reach the same conclusion.

Requirements7

  • 1Active CPA license, Chartered Accountant designation, or experience as a US tax attorney.
  • 2Experience with sales and use tax or broader state and local tax statutory interpretation is strongly preferred.
  • 3Proven ability to read and interpret tax statutes and regulations, not just prepare returns.
  • 4Comfort working with legal logic: conditions, thresholds, AND/OR structures, exceptions, and defined terms.
  • 5Strong written communication with a focus on precision, so another reviewer can replicate your conclusions.
  • 6High attention to detail, especially around 'except for' clauses and edge cases.
  • 7Comfort providing structured feedback through a digital review interface.

Who Should Apply

This role suits a tax professional who enjoys statutory analysis and can translate complex legal language into precise, testable criteria. The work requires careful reading and writing, not client interaction or tax return preparation. If you prefer preparing returns over parsing subsections, or you struggle to write unambiguous feedback, this role will not be a good fit. Candidates often get rejected when they lack an active CPA/CA license, cannot demonstrate statutory interpretation experience beyond return prep, or submit evaluations with vague wording that leaves room for misinterpretation.
