Overview

This contract role puts your CPA skills to use in a different way: you will prepare and review Form 1040 returns for individuals and small businesses, then use that expertise to evaluate and refine AI-generated tax advice. Your work directly trains next-generation models to reason through real-world tax scenarios. You do not need any prior AI experience, only your knowledge of federal and state tax codes. The project runs fully remote for US-based tax professionals.

What You'll Do6

  • 1Prepare and review individual tax returns on Form 1040, plus small business returns such as Schedule C, 1120-S, and 1065, ensuring accuracy and compliance with current tax law.
  • 2Advise on tax optimization strategies and break down complex tax concepts for clients through clear written and verbal communication.
  • 3Evaluate AI-generated tax content against detailed rubrics and provide concise written feedback that helps improve model performance.
  • 4Verify client documentation and answer questions about filing status, deadlines, and required forms.
  • 5Help build and refine assessment rubrics and scoring criteria for tax-related outputs.
  • 6Monitor changes in federal and state tax codes that affect client cases and project outputs.

Requirements5

  • 1Active CPA license in good standing with eligibility to practice in the US.
  • 2At least 5 years of professional experience in tax preparation and advisory work.
  • 3Hands-on experience preparing and filing personal and small business tax returns.
  • 4Strong command of federal tax regulations and the income tax rules for at least one state.
  • 5Excellent written and verbal communication, especially when explaining technical tax topics to non-experts.

Who Should Apply

The right fit is a CPA who enjoys teaching and critiquing, not just crunching numbers. You should be comfortable working with rubrics and giving feedback that helps an AI model learn. This role is not for someone who wants to focus solely on client-facing advisory work with no interest in AI training. Candidates often get rejected for lacking the 5+ years of hands-on preparation experience or for being unable to articulate tax concepts clearly in writing.

Salary Insight

Pay is $80 to $110 per hour, based on experience and qualifications. The rate is confirmed early in the process.

Application Tip

In your cover letter, highlight two things: your active CPA license and specific examples of preparing S-Corp or partnership returns (1120-S, 1065). Also mention any experience writing assessment guidelines or grading criteria, even if it is not from AI work.

Tax Accountant / Specialist

Your daily tax work becomes the raw material for teaching AI to think like an accountant. You'll turn real scenarios from return preparation, provisions, and planning into structured cases that challenge an AI model. For example, you might build a scenario around a 1040 or a 1120-S return, or dig into ASC 740 provision calculations. The work spans corporate, individual, partnership, SALT, and international tax, so you can focus on what you know best. After the AI generates answers, you'll review its output and write feedback that corrects errors, all on a remote schedule that pays $80–$120 per hour.
