Overview

Handshake AI brings speech-language pathologists into AI research to sharpen how models handle clinical reasoning in communication and swallowing care. You draw on your own caseload experience and turn it into expert tasks that current models cannot solve, spanning assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, therapy activities, and caregiver counseling. Each AI response you review gets checked against real SLP practice and guidelines, then you write structured feedback on what went wrong. Projects open throughout the year by specialty area, so the work fits around an active clinical role.

What You'll Do7

  • Build expert-level tasks from your own clinical workflow, covering assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, therapy activities, and patient or caregiver counseling.
  • Score AI-generated responses for clinical accuracy and alignment with current speech-language pathology practice and guidelines.
  • Catch reasoning errors a practicing clinician would spot at once, such as a mismatched diagnosis or an unsafe treatment suggestion.
  • Write clear, organized feedback that names the mistake and shows what a correct clinical answer looks like.
  • Apply depth in a specific area, whether that is speech sound disorders, aphasia, fluency, voice, dysphagia, or AAC.
  • Set your own hours and finish tasks at your own pace, with no fixed schedule and no minimum hour requirement.
  • Keep patient health information and any identifiable patient data out of everything you submit.

Requirements7

  • Completed master's degree or higher in speech-language pathology, or current enrollment in a graduate SLP program.
  • Hold the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) or a state SLP license, or qualify for either.
  • Working clinical knowledge in at least one area: speech sound, articulation, and motor speech disorders (apraxia, dysarthria); child language, literacy, and developmental disorders; adult neurogenic communication disorders and traumatic brain injury; dysphagia; fluency and voice; or augmentative and alternative communication.
  • US work authorization.
  • Strong written communication and close attention to detail.
  • Ability to explain complex speech, language, and swallowing concepts in terms a non-clinician can follow.
  • Comfort working on your own in a remote, asynchronous setup.

Who Should Apply

Practicing SLPs and graduate SLP students with real caseload experience fit best here, particularly those who hold or qualify for CCC-SLP. Depth in one specialty such as dysphagia, aphasia, or AAC counts for more than broad coverage. Bilingual clinicians and those with specialty certification or research work stand out.

Salary Insight

The listed rate is $180.00 per hour, well above typical clinical hourly pay for SLP work, which reflects the specialist and project-based nature of AI training. Expect hours to track project availability rather than a guaranteed weekly load.
