Robotics Engineering Expert - Remote Part-Time
Listing checked September 18, 2026 · pay as published by Handshake AI
Overview
Handshake AI runs a part-time fellowship for robotics engineers who want to improve AI models in their field. You will apply hands-on experience in control systems, motion planning, or robotic systems design to review and grade AI-generated answers. The work centers on ROS/ROS2 workflows, sim-to-real deployment, and full sim-to-solution builds that mirror real engineering tasks. You set your own hours, choose your tasks, and work alongside a current role. No fixed schedule or minimum hour count applies.
What You'll Do8
- 1Build expert-level robotics problems and scenarios from real system design, sim-to-real workflows, and field deployment cases.
- 2Review AI-generated responses for technical accuracy, feasibility, and fit with actual robotics practice.
- 3Assess model output on topics such as ROS/ROS2 control, kinematics and dynamics, sensor fusion, SLAM, and simulation.
- 4Create full sim-to-solution tasks that begin with a simulated setup and end with a deployable robotics solution.
- 5Write structured feedback that flags errors, missing constraints, and stronger engineering approaches.
- 6Check whether proposed solutions would hold up in production or field conditions.
- 7Explain complex robotics decisions in writing so model training teams can use your expert reasoning.
- 8Work at your own pace with no set schedule or minimum hour requirement.
Requirements10
- 1Hands-on experience shipping robotic systems or publishing robotics research, with the ability to build a complete sim-to-solution task.
- 2An MS or PhD in robotics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or computer science with a robotics focus. Senior robotics engineers without an advanced degree also qualify.
- 3Deep expertise in one of these areas: ROS/ROS2 and control theory; motion planning, kinematics and dynamics, and sensor fusion; or SLAM with Gazebo, MuJoCo, or Isaac Sim.
- 4Meet at least two of the three main qualifications above and you may still apply.
- 5US work authorization.
- 6Strong written communication and attention to detail.
- 7The ability to explain complex robotics concepts with clarity.
- 8The ability to work on your own in a remote, asynchronous setting.
- 9Bonus: proficiency across the full robotics stack, including ROS/ROS2, MuJoCo, Gazebo, or Isaac Sim.
- 10Bonus: experience shipping robotics systems to production or publishing in robotics venues.
Who Should Apply
The strongest candidate is a robotics engineer who has shipped real systems or published research and can carry a simulation problem through to a complete solution. You may hold an MS or PhD in robotics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or computer science, or you may be a senior engineer without an advanced degree, with depth in ROS/ROS2 and control theory, motion planning and sensor fusion, or SLAM with Gazebo, MuJoCo, or Isaac Sim. The role fits people who write with precision, explain design choices with clarity, and work on their own in a remote, asynchronous setting. Candidates who need close supervision, fixed hours, or a permanent staff position will not fit this role, and all applicants need US work authorization. Applications often score low when the candidate lists robotics coursework but cannot show a shipped system, a publication, or an end-to-end sim-to-solution build; another common miss is claiming broad stack knowledge without deep proof in one sub-domain.
Salary Insight
The listed rate is $75.00 per hour. For part-time AI training work that calls for graduate-level robotics expertise, this sits above many general annotation projects and matches contributors with advanced degrees or senior industry experience. Pay may tie to project scope and completion, so confirm expected hours and payment schedule during onboarding.

Application Tip
Lead with one concrete robotics project that moved from simulation to deployment, and name the exact tools you used, such as ROS/ROS2, MuJoCo, Gazebo, or Isaac Sim. Add a measurable outcome, for example cycle time, success rate, or fleet size, and tie it to the sub-domain where your expertise runs deepest.
