Overview
Mercor wants senior physicists to shape how frontier AI models handle real physics research. Your day-to-day work centers on judging model output and physics tasks for flawed derivations, unjustified approximations, and dimensional or limit errors that slip past a casual reader. You also write problem specs and reference solutions that set the bar for correctness, then build research-level benchmarks in your own specialty. The engagement runs hourly and fully remote, and the team expects a practicing specialist rather than a generalist.
What You'll Do5
- Review physics tasks and model answers, flagging broken derivations, weak approximations, and results that fail on dimensional or limit checks.
- Write rigorous reference solutions and precise problem statements that mirror how research physics is actually practiced.
- Build challenging evaluation sets and research-level problems inside your area of specialization.
- Partner with researchers and experts in neighboring fields to convert tacit judgment into explicit, teachable criteria.
- Distinguish answers that merely sound plausible from ones that would hold up under peer review.
Requirements7
- PhD in physics, astrophysics, applied physics, or a closely related discipline.
- A senior research post such as faculty appointment, principal investigator, staff or senior scientist at a university, national laboratory, or research organization.
- Deep specialization in one area, for example condensed matter, high-energy or particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology, atomic, molecular, optical and quantum physics, or statistical and computational physics.
- A strong peer-reviewed publication record; competitive fellowships or awards add weight.
- Hands-on experience using large language models in your own work.
- Strong written communication with a talent for structured, precise feedback.
- Based in the United States.
Who Should Apply
Physicists with a PhD and a senior research appointment who specialize in one domain, whether condensed matter, cosmology, or quantum physics. You already use large language models in your work and can spot a plausible-sounding wrong answer fast.
Salary Insight
Pay runs $90 to $140 per hour. That band sits at the top of expert-contribution rates, and the upper end typically tracks candidates with a faculty or principal investigator record and a deep publication history.
