Overview
Mercor is building the multiple-choice question sets that measure how well AI models reason about the physical world, and the company needs working physicists to write and check them. You will operate inside one of eight research areas, whether that is semiconductor physics, quantum optics, plasma physics and fusion, or geophysics and reservoir simulation. Every item you produce carries a worked solution, a difficulty rating, and citations, so it has to hold up when another expert reads it. The work runs asynchronous and fully remote, at 10 or more hours each week.
What You'll Do9
- Compose original multiple-choice problems in your subdomain that test conceptual reasoning rather than formula recall.
- Write each problem statement so it stands alone, with all needed data and definitions included.
- Assign a difficulty tier: Medium for introductory undergraduates, Hard for advanced undergraduates, Expert for post-graduate level and above.
- Pair one correct answer with nine distractors that read as plausible and fail on a narrow technical point.
- Document a full chain-of-thought solution in markdown, with short intermediate steps that follow each other.
- Attach one to five references per question, drawn from peer-reviewed journals or university repositories.
- Take the verification track when assigned: audit pre-written questions for accuracy, clarity, precision, and solvability.
- Record every edit you make to a submitted item and explain the reason behind it.
- Flag problems that lack enough information to solve or that carry more than one defensible answer.
Requirements5
- PhD or active doctoral candidacy in physics, applied physics, astrophysics, or a closely related field.
- Master's degree accepted where depth in one narrow subdomain is exceptional.
- Command of graduate-level physics and the mathematical formalism that comes with it.
- Prior work designing rigorous academic problems; physics olympiad writing counts toward this.
- Written English strong enough to state a complex idea in a few precise sentences.
Who Should Apply
PhD physicists and doctoral candidates who can write an unambiguous problem and defend the answer under review. Strongest fit if you have authored olympiad or graduate exam questions in photonics, quantum optics, fusion, or a similar area and can point to the literature behind each item.
Salary Insight
The posted range is $61 to $77 per hour. Placement within that band tends to track your degree status and how specialized your subdomain is, so a PhD working in spintronics or plasma physics usually lands nearer the top than a master's candidate in a broader area.
