Overview
micro1 seeks a Member of Technical Staff to own research and evaluation projects that sharpen model and system performance. You will design ML-oriented data systems, run failure analysis, and build evaluation frameworks that turn messy real-world behavior into structured signal. Working alongside researchers, domain experts, and operators, you will act as a quality gate, deciding when findings are solid enough to share. This full-time remote role pays $100 to $130 per hour.
What You'll Do9
- 1Lead research and evaluation efforts from problem framing through data design, quality calibration, and signal validation.
- 2Build ML-focused data systems, including task definitions, annotation schemas, rubrics, incentives, and pipelines that support downstream model gains.
- 3Investigate model and system failures to surface root causes, edge cases, and improvement paths.
- 4Convert ambiguous real-world behavior into structured evaluation frameworks and new data categories.
- 5Collaborate with researchers and domain experts to calibrate quality early and keep raising the signal bar.
- 6Iterate on evaluations, datasets, and feedback loops to boost system performance.
- 7Serve as a quality gate: halt claims, pause work, or adjust scope when signal strength or data integrity falls short.
- 8Partner with cross-functional and client-facing teams to turn research progress into clear, evidence-backed narratives.
- 9Spot gaps in data or evaluation coverage and advise where to invest, iterate, or stop based on learnings and impact.
Requirements7
- 1Sharp judgment about research signal quality and when work is ready to be shared externally.
- 2Experience designing ML-oriented datasets, evaluation frameworks, and QA processes.
- 3Ability to translate messy, real-world system behavior into structured research and evaluation opportunities.
- 4Comfort operating in ambiguity with a bias toward ownership and decisive action.
- 5Clear written and verbal communication, especially when explaining tradeoffs, limitations, and signal strength to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- 6Proven ability to work directly with experts during project kickoff, calibration, and iteration.
- 7A systems-level mindset, with interest in improving end-to-end model or agent performance rather than isolated components.
Who Should Apply
This role suits someone who has designed ML-oriented datasets and evaluation frameworks, and who can make tough calls about when research signal is strong enough to act on. You should be comfortable working with domain experts during kickoff and calibration, and you should think in systems rather than isolated components. The role is less suitable for candidates who prefer tightly defined tasks or who avoid making judgment calls under ambiguity. A common reason candidates get rejected is failing to show concrete examples of translating messy real-world behavior into structured evaluations. Another is not demonstrating clear communication about tradeoffs and limitations to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Salary Insight
