Overview
This role places you at the crossroads of economics and artificial intelligence, where you'll shape how AI systems reason about complex economic problems. As a Member of Technical Staff on the research team, you'll design rigorous evaluation frameworks that measure and advance AI performance across economic tasks, working closely with researchers, economists, and engineers to push the boundaries of what AI can achieve in this domain.
What You'll Do8
- 1Create and refine evaluation frameworks—including benchmarks, scoring systems, and quality rubrics—specifically for AI models tackling economic problems.
- 2Conduct hands-on research into economic reasoning and empirical analysis, translating findings into concrete improvements in AI performance.
- 3Build datasets, test cases, and simulated environments that mirror real-world economic research and policy challenges.
- 4Collaborate across disciplines with researchers, economists, engineers, and product teams to assess and improve economics-focused AI and agentic systems.
- 5Analyze model behavior and failure modes to uncover research opportunities and drive performance gains.
- 6Apply econometric methods, causal inference, and statistical analysis to evaluate AI capabilities on economic tasks.
- 7Produce technical reports, research findings, and best practices that advance AI evaluation in economics.
- 8Stay up-to-date with the latest advances in AI, econometrics, and economic research, integrating new techniques into evaluation methodologies.
Requirements9
- 1A PhD in Economics or a closely related quantitative field is required.
- 2You bring 3–5 years of post-PhD experience in applied economic research, whether in industry, academia, or public policy.
- 3Deep expertise in at least one area such as labor economics, macroeconomics, industrial organization, or AI economics.
- 4Strong foundation in econometrics, applied microeconomics, and causal inference, with demonstrated experience using these techniques.
- 5Proficiency in working with large datasets using SQL and statistical programming languages like Python or R.
- 6Proven track record of conducting empirical research or developing analytical methodologies.
- 7Excellent analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- 8Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience producing research papers, technical reports, or policy briefs.
- 9Experience collaborating across research, engineering, product, or policy teams.
Who Should Apply
If you're an economist who loves getting your hands dirty with AI—designing tests, analyzing model behavior, and building evaluation tools—this role is for you. You thrive at the intersection of economics and machine learning, enjoy cross-functional collaboration, and want to help define how AI performs on complex economic reasoning tasks. A PhD and several years of applied research experience are essential, but a curiosity about agentic workflows and enterprise AI will set you apart.
