Overview

Mercor needs senior mathematicians to shape how frontier AI models handle real mathematical research. Your day centers on expert judgment: you assess model outputs and tasks, catch proofs that break under scrutiny, and write the problem statements plus reference solutions that set the standard for correct work. You also build research-level benchmarks in your own specialty so teams can see whether a model is actually getting better. Expect close calibration work with researchers in adjacent fields, turning instinct into written criteria. The position is fully remote and open to candidates based in the United States.

What You'll Do7

  • Review mathematical tasks and model outputs for gaps in proofs, unjustified steps, faulty generalizations, and arguments that sound convincing but fail peer review.
  • Write precise problem statements along with rigorous reference solutions and proofs that match how research mathematics is practiced.
  • Design hard, research-grade problems and evaluation sets within your area of specialization.
  • Partner with other researchers and domain experts to convert tacit expert judgment into explicit, teachable criteria.
  • Give structured, specific written feedback that model teams can act on.
  • Flag reasoning failures that a generalist reviewer would miss, including subtle errors in generalization or missing cases.
  • Help set the bar for what counts as a correct and complete proof across evaluation tasks.

Requirements7

  • PhD in mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, operations research, or a closely related field.
  • A faculty appointment, principal investigator role, staff or senior scientist position, or comparable senior research post at a university, national laboratory, or research organization.
  • Deep specialization in at least one area such as analysis and PDE, algebra and number theory, geometry and topology, probability and statistics, or applied mathematics and optimization.
  • A strong record of peer-reviewed publications, with competitive fellowships or awards a welcome plus.
  • Hands-on experience using large language models in your own work, plus the judgment to separate a sound argument from a plausible-sounding wrong one.
  • Excellent written communication and the ability to deliver precise, well-structured feedback.
  • Residence in the United States.

Who Should Apply

Practicing mathematicians with a PhD and a senior research post who can spot a flawed proof on sight should apply. Ideal candidates combine deep domain depth in one field with real LLM experience and clear technical writing.

Salary Insight

The role pays $90 to $140 per hour. That range sits at the top of typical expert-review work for AI training data and reflects the PhD plus senior research credentials the team expects.
