Overview
AfterQuery, an early-stage company backed by Y Combinator, brings current law students in to review real contracts, filings and regulatory materials on a project basis. Assignments run roughly two to three weeks, and you set your own hours, with most projects expecting somewhere between 10 and 20 hours a week. The work leans on legal research and careful document review: you read a source, test it against the governing rule, then write a structured annotation that ties each conclusion to a page and a verbatim quote. Subject matter spans contracts, real estate, energy and administrative law, and experienced practitioners set the review standards you follow.
What You'll Do6
- Read contracts, agreements, court filings and regulatory materials, then flag the clauses and provisions that carry risk or ambiguity.
- Trace the statutes, regulations and cases that govern a question and turn what you find into a short, structured summary.
- Write annotations that name the document, the page and the exact quoted language behind each conclusion.
- Judge whether a document meets the rule it claims to follow, and record any gap with a citation that supports the call.
- Work through the review guide the team supplies and keep your output consistent from the first document to the last.
- Set your own schedule across asynchronous handoffs and keep each accepted project on track through its deadline.
Requirements7
- Enrolled at an ABA-accredited law school and on track to finish your 1L, 2L or 3L year.
- Transcript that shows strong legal reasoning and analytical work.
- Writing samples that stay clear and organized when the analysis gets complicated.
- Comfort working alone against a written standard, with the discipline to hit deadlines you set for yourself.
- Coursework in contracts, real estate, energy, administrative law or regulatory compliance helps.
- Prior work in a legal internship, clinic, law review or moot court counts in your favor.
- Hands-on use of Westlaw, LexisNexis, Bloomberg Law or Harvey.
Who Should Apply
A 1L, 2L or 3L at an ABA-accredited school who writes tight legal analysis and wants paid, substantive document work alongside class. Coursework in contracts, real estate, energy or administrative law and a research platform you already know (Westlaw, LexisNexis, Harvey) put you ahead.
Salary Insight
$125 per hour, paid for the project work you accept. That rate lands far above standard law student summer or internship pay and sits closer to what firms pay someone who can produce citation-backed analysis without hand-holding.
Application tip
Lead with a writing sample that shows citation discipline: a memo or clinic brief where each claim ties to a page and a quoted line. Name your specific coursework (contracts, real estate, energy, administrative law) and any Westlaw, LexisNexis or Harvey use in your first lines, since those map straight to the preferred list.
