Hardware Engineer, Robotics Lab | $7-$8/hr Remote
Overview
We’re building the backbone for intelligent robots to learn and operate in the real world, and we need a hands-on hardware engineer to join our robotics lab in San Francisco. In this role, you’ll bridge the gap between hardware and software — bringing up new robotic platforms, integrating sensors, and building reliable data pipelines that let researchers rapidly prototype and deploy new capabilities.
What You'll Do8
- 1Set up, integrate, and maintain a variety of robotic platforms including humanoids, manipulators, mobile robots, and custom end effectors.
- 2Develop and maintain robust integrations with ROS 2, vendor hardware SDKs, and custom control interfaces.
- 3Design scalable data-collection pipelines for multimodal robotics datasets — covering RGB, depth, IMU, force/torque, and joint telemetry using formats like ROS Bag, HDF5, Parquet, and MP4.
- 4Build reliable teleoperation systems with a focus on low-latency control, observability, and a smooth operator experience.
- 5Optimize real-time video streaming infrastructure using technologies such as WebRTC, RTSP, FFmpeg, GStreamer, and HLS.
- 6Integrate, synchronize, and calibrate advanced perception hardware including Intel RealSense, Luxonis OAK‑D, ZED, FLIR, GigE, and USB camera systems.
- 7Troubleshoot hardware, networking, and system-level issues across lab and remote deployments to support robot bring-up, maintenance, and fleet operations.
- 8Improve developer tooling, automation, and documentation to boost reliability and research velocity, and work closely with researchers to prototype and iterate on new robotic capabilities.
Requirements9
- 1Strong programming skills in Python and C++, plus working knowledge of C#.
- 2Deep experience with ROS 2, Ubuntu/Linux, Docker, Git, and shell scripting.
- 3Proven ability to integrate robotics hardware through vendor SDKs and low-level hardware APIs.
- 4Solid understanding of networking fundamentals — TCP/IP, SSH, VPNs, REST/gRPC, and WebSockets.
- 5Hands-on experience building teleoperation systems and real-time video streaming infrastructure.
- 6Experience integrating and calibrating multimodal sensor systems (RGB, depth, stereo, IMU).
- 7Familiarity with managing large robotics datasets on cloud storage platforms like AWS S3 or Cloudflare R2.
- 8Strong debugging skills across hardware, software, networking, and embedded systems.
- 9Comfort working in a fast-paced, experimental environment where priorities shift quickly.
Who Should Apply
You’re an engineer who thrives at the intersection of hardware and software — equally comfortable writing low-level control code, debugging a sensor stack, and optimizing data pipelines. You have a builder’s mindset, a deep command of ROS 2 and Linux, and you’re excited to collaborate with researchers to turn prototypes into production-ready robotics systems. Bonus points if you’ve contributed to open-source robotics or worked with autonomous systems and computer vision.
Salary Insight
This full-time role comes with a base salary range of $140,000 – $240,000, plus equity compensation, performance-based bonuses, up to 100% reimbursement for health-insurance premiums, paid time off, and a 401(K) plan with company match.
Required Skills
Application Tip
When applying, include links to a GitHub repo or a short video showing a robotics project you’ve built from scratch — especially one where you integrated ROS 2 with custom hardware or streaming pipelines. Concrete examples of your hands-on work speak louder than a list of skills.
