Corporate/M&A Lawyer (Japan) | $140-$150/hr Remote
Overview
Mercor recruits experienced corporate/M&A lawyers in Japan to act as expert reviewers for a legal AI benchmarking project. You will feed identical legal prompts into two LLM platforms, compare their outputs, and grade each response against a fixed rubric. The work is remote, paid per hour, and an NDA applies to every task. The initial batch of about 10 hours can expand if the collaboration goes well.
What You'll Do4
- 1Enter each assigned prompt into both AI platforms in the same session.
- 2Read the two responses side by side and note differences in legal reasoning.
- 3Apply the provided scoring rubric to every answer and assign a grade.
- 4Write a short justification for each score, highlighting specific legal errors or strengths.
Requirements4
- 1At least two years (three or more preferred) in a corporate/M&A or transactional role at a law firm. In-house lawyers qualify only if the move happened within the last two years, with prior law firm experience.
- 2Licensed to practice law in Japan with deep knowledge of Japanese corporate and commercial law.
- 3Native or business-fluent Japanese, with the ability to write precise legal explanations.
- 4Comfortable working alone against a rubric and delivering before deadlines.
Who Should Apply
The right candidate is a Japan-qualified lawyer with a background in corporate/M&A at a law firm, now in practice or having moved in-house no more than two years ago. The role suits people who enjoy methodical comparison and consistent scoring more than open-ended legal analysis. The role fits poorly with lawyers who prefer drafting documents or doing client advisory work. Frequent rejections happen when applicants lack the minimum two years of law firm experience, or when their current in-house tenure exceeds the two-year window. Another regular miss is imprecise written Japanese, because each evaluation requires clear written feedback.
Salary Insight
The hourly rate is $140 to $150. This rate aligns with the bracket for senior legal consultants who take on specialized review work in Japanese corporate law.

Application Tip
State your exact years of law-firm experience in corporate/M&A and, if you are in-house, the date you moved. Add a short Japanese-language paragraph explaining how you would compare two legal responses, since written precision is a core requirement.
