Overview

micro1 seeks Combat Arms & Targeting subject-matter experts to train next-generation AI for a defense customer. Your military judgment will directly shape how models reason about targeting and fires. No AI background is needed; deep domain experience is what counts. This is a remote contractor role with flexible hours.

What You'll Do6

  • Map real-world military scenarios to an approved taxonomy, distinguishing conceptual explanation, lawful policy support, evidence curation, and the boundary with operational decision support, destructive execution, autonomous weapons, and unlawful planning.
  • Surface subtle or non-obvious boundary cases that less-experienced reviewers might misclassify, capturing nuanced judgment.
  • Grade AI-generated responses on source handling, expression of uncertainty (e.g., conflicting pattern-of-life intelligence), reasoning quality, stated limitations, and operational utility.
  • Flag cases where models wrongly refuse valid conceptual or policy questions, helping refine model parameters.
  • Document edge cases, gray areas, and disagreements to maintain a transparent, defensible answer key for training and review.
  • Feed insights from operational, targeting, and fires expertise into ongoing guideline refinement.

Requirements7

  • Extensive hands-on experience in joint or service-specific fires, targeting, or weapons employment decision-making (e.g., combat pilot, battle manager, JTAC, field or air-defense artillery officer, naval strike officer, carrier air-wing targeteer, or Aegis-qualified TAO/IAMD WTI).
  • Advanced tactical training such as TOPGUN, USAF Weapons School, Joint Firepower Course, or allied equivalents.
  • Demonstrated teaching, leadership, or evaluative experience (e.g., WTI, instructor, mission commander, or debrief facilitator).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to articulate operational judgment clearly and succinctly.
  • Strong capability to assess targeting and fires utility, discriminate boundaries, and provide clear justifications.
  • Law-of-armed-conflict or rules-of-engagement fluency from an operational perspective (not a legal role) is a plus.
  • Experience with AI model evaluation, wargaming, or red-teaming is valued but not required.

Who Should Apply

Veterans with deep fires or targeting backgrounds, especially those who have taught or evaluated others, will thrive here. If you can explain operational judgment in plain language and spot subtle boundary issues, this role fits.

Salary Insight

The rate is $60 to $110 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

Application tip

Highlight specific targeting or fires roles and any instructor or evaluator experience, using exact program names like TOPGUN or JTAC. Quantify your operational decision-making impact where possible.
