Overview

Turing is a San Francisco-based research accelerator that supports frontier AI labs and enterprise AI deployment. This contract role puts experienced aerospace, mechanical, or electrical engineers on a PAA-based project focused on simulation-led engineering tasks. You will create CAD models, run simulations, and write engineering problem statements used to train and evaluate advanced AI models. The work spans CAD engineering, simulation workflows, and technical documentation across aero, mechanical, and electrical domains. Engineers must work independently and keep at least a 4-hour overlap with PST.

What You'll Do9

  • 1Build CAD models for aerospace, mechanical, and electrical components and run simulations on them.
  • 2Validate designs with industry-standard tools including CATIA, SolidWorks, ANSYS, or MATLAB.
  • 3Write realistic electrical engineering problem statements, simulation models, schematics, calculations, and supporting technical assets.
  • 4Define inputs, assumptions, constraints, operating conditions, output metrics, and acceptance criteria for each simulation task.
  • 5Confirm results through analytical checks and review other engineers' submissions for technical correctness and completeness.
  • 6Translate engineering requirements into simulation models and workflow automation.
  • 7Improve designs based on simulation results and document methodologies, processes, and outcomes.
  • 8Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to keep simulation work aligned with project goals.
  • 9Provide clear written explanations of assumptions and engineering decisions for AI model evaluation.

Requirements8

  • 110+ years of experience working in CAD engineering and simulation-focused organizations.
  • 2Strong aerospace, mechanical, or electrical engineering fundamentals.
  • 3Hands-on proficiency with domain-specific simulation tools such as FreeCAD, CalculiX, Gmsh, ParaView, Python, Cura/PrusaSlicer for mechanical; OpenRocket, OpenVSP, XFoil, AVL, OpenFOAM/SU2, FreeCAD, Python for aerospace; and KiCad, ngspice, Qucs-S, Python, Octave, FEMM, openEMS for electrical.
  • 4Professional-level experience with at least one of MATLAB/Simulink, Simscape Electrical, LTspice, PSpice, ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD, OpenDSS, Ansys Maxwell, COMSOL, Altium Designer, KiCad, AutoCAD Electrical, or EPLAN.
  • 5Python or MATLAB scripting experience for automation, analysis, and result processing.
  • 6For electrical engineers: strong fundamentals in circuit analysis, power systems, electrical machines, power electronics, control systems, protection, grounding, instrumentation, or electronics design, with deep practical expertise in at least one specialization.
  • 7Ability to define engineering problems, run analytical validation and sanity checks, assess design trade-offs, and document technical work.
  • 8A PhD in mechanical, electrical, or aerospace engineering and prior experience with leading aerospace or engineering companies are preferred but not required.

Who Should Apply

The ideal candidate has 10+ years of hands-on CAD and simulation experience in aerospace, mechanical, or electrical engineering and can produce clear, reproducible engineering solutions without close supervision. Electrical specialists need deep command of one area such as power systems, power electronics, or electronics design, plus practical tool fluency in KiCad, ngspice, PSpice, or similar software. This role is less suitable for junior engineers or professionals who prefer long-term product development over short, documentation-heavy contract assignments. Candidates often score low when their simulation work lacks analytical validation or reproducible scripts, and when they cannot clearly state assumptions and acceptance criteria in writing. Reviewers also reject applications that show shallow familiarity with many tools instead of deep expertise in the specific simulation tools named for the chosen domain.
