Bilingual Finnish STEM Expert (PhD) — AI Safety | $61-$65/hr Remote
Overview
We're hiring PhD-level scientists in chemistry or biology who also speak Finnish at a native level to test how AI models handle complex technical questions. Your job is to write challenging prompts in Finnish, then evaluate the model's answers for scientific accuracy and responsible handling of dual-use information. The role is fully remote, part-time, and starts immediately. You don't need any machine learning background; we provide the evaluation framework and training. What matters most is your deep domain expertise and judgment about sensitive topics.
What You'll Do4
- 1Craft detailed, expert-level prompts in Finnish that probe scientific topics within your specialty, such as organic synthesis, molecular biology, or radiochemistry.
- 2Assess model responses to those prompts, scoring them for factual precision, relevance, and appropriate handling of sensitive or dual-use content.
- 3Annotate and label conversations according to the project's safety and quality criteria, documenting why a response meets or misses the bar.
- 4Apply structured classification guidelines to sort prompts and interactions into predefined categories reflecting risk and topic area.
Requirements6
- 1A PhD in chemistry, biology, or a closely related field, either completed or in progress (postdoc or faculty level accepted).
- 2Native or near-native fluency in Finnish, plus business-level English for clear written communication with the team.
- 3Proven hands-on experience with modern laboratory and computational techniques relevant to your subfield, such as molecular cloning, spectroscopy, or reaction modeling.
- 4Demonstrated judgment on scientific safety, including the ability to recognize dual-use information and handle it responsibly.
- 5Ideally, specialized knowledge in radiochemistry, nuclear chemistry, radiation physics, or energetic materials.
- 6Preferably, some experience evaluating, grading, or red-teaming technical content, either academic or professional.
Who Should Apply
This role is for a PhD scientist who is equally comfortable at the bench and in front of a computer, and who writes Finnish with native precision. You should have a clear subfield specialty, not just a general degree, so you can generate prompts that push the model to its limits. If you're not a PhD in a relevant field or your Finnish isn't near-native, you won't be a good fit. Candidates often get rejected when they lack that deep domain focus, or when they overstate their Finnish proficiency, because the evaluation requires nuanced, error-free technical writing in Finnish.
Salary Insight
Pay is $61 to $65 per hour. That rate is well above the going range for typical AI evaluation work, reflecting the PhD-level expertise and rare Finnish fluency this role demands. It matches what you'd expect for contract scientific consulting at a senior level.

Application Tip
Strengthen your application by including a short, Finnish-language writing sample that demonstrates how you explain a complex concept in your field to a well-educated layperson. Also mention any direct experience with biosafety, chemical safety, or dual-use research protocols to show you appreciate the stakes.
