Overview
This contract role with micro1 asks you to evaluate artworks and photographs, deciding what they are, where they come from, and how they should be presented. You will work remotely and worldwide, applying your curatorial or collections background to review image sets and individual works. The position pays $55 to $100 per hour and suits people who have made real acquisition, attribution, or display decisions in museums, galleries, auction houses, or archives. Strong written English and comfort with attribution and print processes are key.
What You'll Do6
- Assess individual works or groups of works to determine which ones fit a specific theme, exhibition, or collection.
- Determine attribution, date, medium, edition, and print type (such as vintage versus later print) based on visual and descriptive information.
- Identify gaps in provenance, questionable attributions, and risks related to condition or display.
- Verify that titles, labels, and descriptions are accurate and present the work fairly.
- Flag issues involving rights, consent, or ownership.
- Provide a concise written rationale for each decision so a reviewer can follow your reasoning.
Requirements5
- Professional experience as a curator, assistant curator, collections or exhibitions specialist, gallery director, auction house specialist, art or photo archivist, or registrar.
- A track record of real decisions: selecting works, attributing them, planning displays, or handling loans and acquisitions.
- For photography review: familiarity with prints, editions, and photographic processes.
- Ability to explain clearly why a work belongs in a show or why an attribution is doubtful.
- Clear written English.
Who Should Apply
The role fits curators, collections specialists, gallery or auction specialists, and photo archivists who have made acquisition, display, or attribution decisions. You should be comfortable judging works from images and descriptions and writing short, clear explanations. Photography expertise with prints and editions is a plus for some projects.
