Overview

This role supports an AI research initiative by creating and validating advanced mathematics assessments. You choose between two tracks: question authoring (writing original multiple-choice problems) or question verification (checking and editing existing problems). The subject matter spans signal processing, financial mathematics, mathematical economics, combinatorial optimization, and climate modeling. The work is asynchronous and 100% remote, with a commitment of 10 or more hours per week. Each question must meet exacting standards for clarity, rigor, and difficulty calibration.

What You'll Do7

  • 1Write original multiple-choice questions in your chosen math domain that test conceptual depth rather than memorization.
  • 2Ensure every problem statement is self-contained and unambiguous, providing all necessary information within the prompt.
  • 3Assign a difficulty rating of Medium, Hard, or Expert based on undergraduate to post-graduate levels.
  • 4Create 1 correct answer plus 9 plausible but subtly incorrect alternatives designed to challenge expert-level solvers.
  • 5Document the full solution using step-by-step chain-of-thought reasoning in markdown.
  • 6Attach 1 to 5 academic references from peer-reviewed journals or university repositories for each question.
  • 7When verifying, inspect questions for clarity, completeness, precision, and solvability, then log any edits you make.

Requirements5

  • 1PhD or doctoral candidacy in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related field.
  • 2A master's degree is acceptable if you show exceptional depth in one subdomain.
  • 3Strong command of graduate-level mathematics and formal proof writing.
  • 4Prior experience writing rigorous academic problems or mathematical competition items is a strong plus.
  • 5Excellent written English and the ability to explain complex ideas clearly.

Who Should Apply

The ideal candidate holds a PhD (or is finishing one) in a mathematical field and can point to concrete, rigorous work like published proofs or competition problems. This role suits someone who enjoys the craft of writing and critiquing math questions, not just solving them. It is less fitting for mathematicians who want open-ended research or who are uncomfortable with strict format rules like nine distractors and attached references. Applications tend to fail when the sample question is under-specified, has a flaw in the solution, or shows weak written English. Candidates without a doctorate or a deep, demonstrated subdomain specialty do not make it past the first screen.

Salary Insight

The posted rate is $61.00 to $77.00 per hour. This range aligns with premium contract rates for advanced-degree holders producing academic-grade assessment content for AI training.
