Overview
Turing pairs your production engineering judgment with AI training work: you review machine-written code, trace failures back to their root causes, and write reference solutions that teach models better habits. Expect to work inside unfamiliar codebases in languages such as Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Java, or Go, judging fixes, APIs, refactors, and database changes against explicit criteria. You also help shape the rubrics and annotations researchers use to score coding benchmarks. The engagement runs roughly three months on a freelance basis, fully remote, with at least 40 hours a week and four hours of daily overlap with Pacific Time. The work centers on code evaluation rather than manual testing.
What You'll Do6
- Assess machine-generated code for correctness, reliability, security, performance, scalability, and maintainability.
- Trace bugs, missing edge cases, partial implementations, and architectural weak points in codebases you have never seen before.
- Compare competing fixes, features, refactors, API changes, and database migrations, then argue for the stronger option.
- Rewrite weak implementations and explain the reasoning behind each change in plain technical English.
- Build evaluation criteria, annotations, and scoring rubrics alongside researchers working on coding benchmarks.
- Call out design and error-handling gaps that would break in production, and document what a sound solution looks like.
Requirements9
- Seven or more years of professional software engineering, covering building, maintaining, debugging, and reviewing production systems.
- Deep proficiency in at least one of Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Java, C++, Go, C#, Ruby, PHP, or Rust.
- Working command of clean code, modular architecture, abstraction, and error handling.
- A record of finding functional, performance, security, and design flaws, backed by strong debugging and root-cause analysis.
- Comfort with Git and collaborative code review workflows.
- Solid grasp of data structures, algorithms, APIs, databases, and application architecture.
- Strong written English for technical write-ups and recommendations.
- Availability of 40 hours per week, 8 hours per day, plus four hours of daily Pacific Time overlap.
- A LinkedIn profile URL included in your resume.
Who Should Apply
Engineers with seven or more years in production software who enjoy reading unfamiliar code and explaining precisely why it fails. Fluency in one major language, comfort with Git-based review, and 40 hours a week with Pacific Time overlap round out the fit.
