Remote Survey Research Expert for AI Evaluation
Overview
Mercor is connecting you with a leading AI research organization that needs seasoned survey professionals to evaluate its surveys for methodological quality. You will examine question wording, response scales, and sampling approaches, and articulate why certain designs yield unreliable or biased data. This remote, hourly role suits practitioners from market research, consumer insights, behavioral science, and related fields who have designed and fielded surveys in real projects. Your critical eye will help improve how AI systems think about research design and evidence quality. Candidates with hands-on experience at research agencies or internal insights teams will feel at home.
What You'll Do9
- 1Review each survey question set for clarity, neutrality, and whether questions are double-barreled or ambiguous.
- 2Assess skip logic, display rules, and screeners to see if they risk confusing respondents or distorting data.
- 3Identify potential sources of sampling, measurement, response, and selection bias that could undermine reliability.
- 4Judge whether the intended respondent population can produce interpretable results given the fielding approach.
- 5Evaluate recruitment plans, quota designs, and data quality controls to ensure the sample matches the research goal.
- 6Provide structured, actionable feedback on methodological weaknesses, explaining your reasoning so the AI can learn from it.
- 7Apply real-world research judgment when survey design has no single correct answer, choosing the approach that minimizes error.
- 8Help benchmark AI-generated surveys and research logic against professional standards used in market research and social science.
- 9Flag respondent burden and ordering effects that might skew answers or lower completion rates.
Requirements8
- 1At least three years of professional experience designing or fielding surveys in market research, consumer insights, behavioral science, or UX research.
- 2Hands-on history with survey development from start to finish, including writing questions, managing data collection, and checking data quality.
- 3Solid grasp of questionnaire design principles and the common pitfalls that introduce bias and error.
- 4Exposure to respondent panels, sampling strategies, screeners, or quota systems, with the ability to spot flaws in these areas.
- 5Skill at critical evaluation rather than simply following a script; you should be able to justify why a specific design choice reduces or increases survey error.
- 6Strong written communication, so you can explain methodological trade-offs in clear, concise language.
- 7Attention to detail and comfort making judgment calls when information is incomplete.
- 8Familiarity with survey tools like Qualtrics, SurveyMonkey, Alchemer, Forsta, or QuestionPro is helpful but not mandatory.
Who Should Apply
The ideal candidate comes from a market research agency, an in-house consumer insights team, a polling firm, or a behavioral science group, with at least three years of professional survey design and fielding under their belt. You should feel comfortable tearing apart a questionnaire and explaining why a particular flow or wording leads to biased answers. This role is less suitable for someone who has only administered surveys created by others, or who lacks hands-on experience with sampling and quotas. Candidates who score low often cannot shift from execution to critical evaluation, or they struggle to articulate the reasoning behind their methodological decisions. If you have sharpened your judgment on real projects and can justify your recommendations, this is the right fit.
Salary Insight
The pay is $120 per hour. That rate sits on the higher end for survey consulting, which signals you need deep experience and strong critical judgment rather than basic survey administration.

Application Tip
When applying, include a short case study where you caught a design flaw in a real survey and corrected it. Explain what the flaw was, how you identified it, and the change you made. This directly demonstrates the analytical eye and communication skills this role asks for.
