Power Systems Engineer - AI Research (Canada)
Listing checked September 18, 2026 · pay as published by Handshake AI
Overview
Handshake AI seeks practicing power engineers to join an ongoing, remote fellowship that improves how AI models handle power systems reasoning. You will turn real design, analysis, testing, commissioning, operations, and field experience into expert prompts and review model answers for technical accuracy, safety, and code alignment. The work covers topics such as microgrids, high-voltage substations, protection and control, and power-flow or short-circuit studies. Hours are flexible and asynchronous, with most contributors working 5 to 20 hours per week and no minimum commitment.
What You'll Do6
- 1Write expert-level power engineering problems and scenarios that come from real design, analysis, testing, commissioning, operations, and field work.
- 2Create prompts for AI models that reflect your power systems specialty.
- 3Check AI-generated answers for technical accuracy, practical feasibility, safety, and alignment with industry standards and engineering practice.
- 4Review calculations, assumptions, methods, and recommendations tied to power flow, short-circuit analysis, protection, grid stability, equipment selection, and related topics.
- 5Send structured written feedback that helps AI models improve.
- 6Set your own hours and work in a remote, async setting with no required minimum.
Requirements7
- 1Live in Canada.
- 2Bring at least 2 years of hands-on power systems engineering experience in industry.
- 3Hold an MS or PhD in electrical engineering, power engineering, or a related field. A BS in electrical engineering also qualifies with strong industry experience.
- 4Show depth in one or more areas: transmission or distribution systems; microgrids and distributed energy resources; high-voltage equipment and substations; protection, control, and relay coordination; power-flow, short-circuit, stability, or contingency analysis; grid integration of renewable energy and battery storage; power quality, grounding, or arc-flash analysis; utility operations, commissioning, or field engineering.
- 5Write with care and precision about complex power engineering concepts.
- 6Work on your own in a remote, async environment.
- 7Show strong writing and attention to detail.
Who Should Apply
Practicing power engineers with 2 or more years in transmission, distribution, microgrids, high-voltage substations, protection and control, or grid operations will fit this fellowship well. The strongest applicants hold an MS or PhD, or a BS paired with deep industry work, and can explain relay coordination, short-circuit studies, or arc-flash analysis in plain language. A PE license, work with IEEE, IEC, NERC, or NFPA standards, and tool experience in ETAP, PSS/E, PSCAD, or Python add weight. This fellowship fits people who want flexible, project-based side work rather than a full-time engineering post. Candidates outside Canada cannot proceed, and those who need a fixed schedule or guaranteed hours should look elsewhere. Candidates often score low when they list academic power systems coursework without hands-on industry projects, or when their writing samples stay vague about calculations, assumptions, and standards.
Salary Insight
Pay is $96.00 per hour. For project-based AI evaluation that requires deep power systems knowledge, this rate sits at the expert end and matches experienced engineers, including those with PE licenses or graduate degrees. The listing gives no benefits or guaranteed hours, and project availability shapes how much work you can take on.

Application Tip
Lead your application with one or two concrete power systems projects that show your hands-on work, such as a protection and relay coordination study, a microgrid design, or a short-circuit analysis. Name the tools you used (ETAP, PSS/E, PSCAD, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, Python) and state your degree, years in industry, and any PE license or IEEE, IEC, NERC, or NFPA standards work. That detail helps reviewers see your fit fast.
