Overview

We're seeking accomplished mathematicians to help build the next generation of AI systems capable of reasoning at the level of a working research mathematician. You'll partner with leading AI labs to review papers, create challenging problems, and evaluate model outputs across pure and applied mathematics — from number theory to mathematical physics. This part-time, remote role offers $80–$110/hr and is ideal for researchers whose own work sits at the frontier.

What You'll Do5

  • 1Assess mathematics research papers for correctness, novelty, and rigor.
  • 2Author and review difficult mathematics problems used to train and evaluate frontier AI models.
  • 3Evaluate AI outputs on tasks such as proof construction, problem-solving, formalization, and conjecture exploration.
  • 4Identify subtle errors in model outputs that a working mathematician would catch — like unjustified steps, misapplied hypotheses, or plausible-but-wrong proofs.
  • 5Collaborate with a small program team and other senior contributors.

Requirements4

  • 1First-author or sole-author publications in top journals such as Annals of Mathematics, Inventiones Mathematicae, or Journal of the AMS, or top-tier venues in adjacent fields (e.g., STOC, FOCS).
  • 2A doctorate or postdoctoral training from a top-20 global institution in mathematics or a related STEM field.
  • 3Competitive fellowships or honors like the Clay Research Fellowship, NSF GRFP, Sloan Fellowship, or earlier-career distinctions such as Putnam Fellow or IMO medal.
  • 4Current or recent active research role — as a PhD candidate, postdoc, faculty member, or industry research mathematician.

Who Should Apply

This role is for mathematicians who are deeply engaged in research and want to apply their expertise to advance AI reasoning. Whether you're a senior PhD student with strong publications, a postdoc, or a faculty member, your depth of research output matters more than years of experience. If you instinctively catch subtle mathematical errors and enjoy pushing the boundaries of what AI can achieve in science and math, you'll thrive here.

Salary Insight

Compensation is $80.00–$110.00 per hour, reflecting research seniority and credentials. This is a part-time role of up to 20 hours per week.

Application Tip

When applying, highlight specific examples of your research that demonstrate frontier-level mathematical reasoning — such as a challenging theorem you proved or a novel approach you developed. Tailor your resume to showcase publications in top journals and any experience with AI or machine learning, even if informal.
