Overview

Turing builds training data and evaluation benchmarks for frontier AI labs, and the LifeSciBench team needs biologists who can turn real research into hard, defensible test problems. In this role you write graduate-level questions drawn from molecular biology, genomics, structural biology, and adjacent fields, then back each one with a reference answer that holds up under scrutiny. Work is fully remote, non-coding, and organized around a one-month contractor engagement with at least 40 hours per week and 4 hours of overlap with Pacific time.

What You'll Do8

  • 1Write original life sciences problems at graduate difficulty, each anchored in a realistic research scenario rather than textbook recall.
  • 2Produce reference answers that trace every step of the reasoning and cite the biological evidence behind each conclusion.
  • 3Read and interpret experimental results, datasets, figures, sequences, and protein structures to shape task content.
  • 4Check biological claims, calculations, and assumptions for accuracy before a task moves forward.
  • 5Flag questions that are ambiguous, have competing valid answers, or lack enough constraints to be scored fairly.
  • 6Keep each task self-contained and documented so another scientist can reproduce the reasoning.
  • 7Rework tasks in response to reviewer notes while holding your output volume steady.
  • 8Translate dense research findings into precise questions that separate genuine reasoning from memorized facts.

Requirements6

  • 1Ph.D., postdoctoral training, or comparable advanced research experience in the life sciences.
  • 2Deep expertise in at least one biological discipline such as molecular biology, genetics, genomics, cell biology, biochemistry, neuroscience, microbiology, immunology, evolutionary biology, ecology, structural biology, biophysics, developmental biology, cancer biology, or pharmacology.
  • 3Track record of interpreting experiments, datasets, and published research findings correctly.
  • 4Scientific writing that stays exact and readable for a non-specialist reviewer.
  • 5Ability to commit at least 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, with 4 hours overlapping Pacific Standard Time.
  • 6No programming or code execution is part of this position.

Who Should Apply

Bench scientists, postdocs, and faculty who read primary literature closely and can spot a flawed experimental interpretation will fit this work well, especially those in genomics, structural biology, immunology, or neuroscience. Candidates with peer-reviewed publications, manuscript review experience, or a history of building graduate-level assessments tend to score highest. The role suits people who enjoy writing precise, self-contained questions more than those who want to run experiments or write code. Applications often fall short when a candidate lists a broad biology background without naming one discipline where they can defend claims in detail, or when they submit tasks that reward factual recall instead of multi-step reasoning. If you need a flexible, low-hour schedule, this contract will not work, since it demands 40 hours per week plus Pacific time overlap.

Application Tip

In your application, name the single biological subfield where you can defend claims under review, then describe one graduate-level problem you have written or one manuscript you have refereed. Reviewers weigh demonstrated task design and evidence interpretation far more than the length of your publication list.

Biology Expert - Remote Life Sciences Contract

AfterQuery hires biologists as independent contractors to create and grade life science scenarios for frontier AI evaluations. You design biology problems that mirror the reasoning a working scientist uses, from experimental setup through evidence-based conclusions. The role centers on AI evaluation data: writing reference answers, checking model output for mechanistic accuracy, and catching explanations that sound right but misstate biology. Work stays inside your specialty, and the role is remote with a minimum of 10 hours per week.

Biology Expert - Remote AI Evaluation Contract

AfterQuery's STEM group seeks biology specialists to sharpen how AI systems reason about the life sciences. You will hold a remote contract that averages 20 hours each week, with a focus on model training and evaluation. Daily work spans writing difficult biology prompts, reviewing model responses for accuracy and sound reasoning, and catching mistakes such as invented citations, obsolete taxonomy, or mechanisms applied to the wrong context. You may also draft reference answers and build grading rubrics that other reviewers use.

Biology Expert - Remote Life Sciences (Part-Time)

Mercor keeps a standing pool of biologists who help AI research teams judge work that requires real lab experience. When a project opens, you may write original research problems from your own area, complete with the system, data, controls, and a reference answer. You also grade model-written experimental designs and interpretations, checking whether statistics fit the design and whether conclusions follow from the figures. Another task involves spotting textbook answers that fail at the bench because of organism limits, assay sensitivity, or what reagents can show. Rates for past projects ranged from $70 to $105 an hour.
