Overview
micro1 is looking for senior software engineers to build reinforcement learning environments for a customer project. You will create reproducible coding challenges that test an AI model's ability to fix bugs, add features, refactor code, and boost performance. Each task includes a golden reference solution. No AI background is needed, just deep expertise in languages like Python3, Java, Rust, C++, or TypeScript. This is a remote contract role at roughly 15 hours per week.
What You'll Do7
- 1Design and build reinforcement learning environments that simulate real software engineering problems, complete with a clear problem statement and a verified reference solution.
- 2Write expert-level code samples and debugging walkthroughs in your primary language, such as Python3, Java, Rust, Go, C++, or TypeScript.
- 3Diagnose and fix complex defects and performance bottlenecks across varied codebases, documenting your reasoning step by step.
- 4Implement new features that are scalable and maintainable, following industry best practices.
- 5Refactor legacy code to improve clarity, efficiency, and long-term reliability.
- 6Document your technical decisions and solution approaches to support high-quality AI training data.
- 7Review and validate code contributions from other engineers for correctness and clarity.
Requirements8
- 1Significant hands-on experience in at least one of: Python3, Java, Rust, Go, C++, or TypeScript.
- 2Strong grasp of algorithms, data structures, and core software engineering principles.
- 3Proven ability to debug complex systems, resolve bugs, and deliver effective performance optimizations.
- 4Experience refactoring large codebases and modernizing legacy systems.
- 5A track record of shipping high-impact features from concept to delivery in cross-functional teams.
- 6Excellent documentation and communication skills to explain technical concepts clearly.
- 7Curiosity about AI and its challenges, though prior AI experience is not required.
- 8A public GitHub or GitLab profile with clear open source contributions.
Who Should Apply
This role suits a senior engineer who enjoys solving intricate coding puzzles and has a portfolio of open source work to prove it. You should be comfortable working independently and documenting your thought process in detail. If you prefer building products over teaching or writing code samples, this may not be the right fit. Candidates often get rejected when their GitHub profile lacks meaningful contributions or when they cannot clearly explain their debugging and refactoring approach. Strong algorithmic thinking and clean code are essential.
Salary Insight
The pay range is $50 to $100 per hour, but compensation is output-based. You are paid per task that meets the project specifications, and the time per task varies by experience. There is a minimum number of tasks required each week.

VerifiedSenior Software Engineer – Remote Contract
micro1 is hiring Senior Software Engineers to help train next-generation AI systems. You will create Reinforcement Learning Environments that test an AI model's ability to solve complex software engineering problems, such as fixing code, building features, refactoring, and optimizing performance. Your work will directly shape how models learn and reason. This is a remote contractor role, about 15 hours per week, and no prior AI experience is needed. You will use your expertise in languages like Python3, Java, Rust, Go, C++, or TypeScript to produce high-quality, real-world input.

VerifiedSenior Software Engineer
micro1 is choosing senior engineers to build Reinforcement Learning Environments for a customer project that trains next-generation AI models. As a remote contractor working about 15 hours a week, you will assemble reproducible coding scenarios and a matching golden reference solution. The tasks test whether an AI can fix defects, add features, refactor old code, and clear performance bottlenecks in realistic codebases. Practical mastery of Python3, Java, Rust, Go, C++, or TypeScript matters more than prior AI experience.

VerifiedSenior Software Engineer – Remote Contract
This remote contractor role at micro1 puts your backend engineering skills to work on training next-generation AI systems. You will design realistic coding challenges that involve feature implementation and bug fixes, then build deterministic verifiers that accept valid solutions and reject everything else. The schedule is flexible, you choose your hours and days, including weekends. No prior AI experience is needed. Your domain knowledge in languages like Python, Java, Rust, or TypeScript is what matters.

VerifiedSenior Software Engineer
Building reinforcement learning environments sits at the center of this remote contractor role. You'll create reproducible workflows that mirror real DevOps and CI/CD debugging scenarios, using command-line tools like git, docker, gdb, and ffmpeg. Each environment you produce comes with a golden reference solution that marks what a correct result looks like. Your command of C++ or Python (or Java, GoLang, TypeScript, Rust) matters more than hands-on AI experience, though the output here shapes how AI models learn and reason. Expect to work about 15 hours a week with output-based pay.

VerifiedAI Engineer
micro1 hires software engineers to build evaluation environments that push AI systems into realistic engineering workflows. As a remote contractor, you set your own schedule at roughly 15 hours per week and focus on one thing: creating reinforcement learning environments that force an AI model to use Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools while solving bugs, implementing features, or refactoring code. Each environment needs deterministic verification and a golden reference solution so results are measurable and repeatable. Prior AI experience isn't required; your coding background and judgment are what the project needs.
