Overview

AfterQuery hires PhD-level computational biologists to turn published research with released code into coding tasks for frontier AI agents. You begin with a recent paper, often your own, remove the implementation behind its central contribution, and package the rest as a task where an agent must rebuild that piece and beat the paper's results on its own benchmarks. The domain covers read alignment, genome assembly, indexing and variant calling tools. Work runs remote and asynchronous, and pay comes per approved task.

What You'll Do7

  • Pick a recent paper with public code, ideally one you wrote, and locate the code that carries its main technical claim.
  • Remove that core implementation while keeping the surrounding files and dependencies needed for a workable task.
  • Write a task statement that tells an AI agent what to rebuild and which published results to match or exceed.
  • Create held-out evaluation workloads and set pass thresholds for each metric.
  • Build a hidden reference solution that restores the paper's method.
  • Add a second solution that clears the threshold and shows the bar is reachable.
  • Review agent attempts on your task and judge each submission against the stated metrics.

Requirements6

  • Published computational biology research at Bioinformatics, RECOMB, ISMB, Genome Research or a comparable venue.
  • A public code release tied to at least one paper, with a GitHub or artifact link you can share.
  • A PhD in computer science or a related field, completed or in progress.
  • First-author work that reports a measured gain over a baseline (preferred).
  • Docker experience and reproducible benchmark setups (preferred).
  • Depth in read alignment, genome assembly, indexing and variant calling tools (preferred).

Who Should Apply

The role suits a computational biology researcher who publishes, ships code, and wants to turn their own work into an evaluation task for AI agents. You should hold a PhD in CS or a related field, have a paper with a public code release, and bring comfort with Docker-based benchmarks and genomics tooling such as read alignment or variant calling.

Salary Insight

The listing quotes $80 per hour and also sets $200 per approved task, with each task taking a few hours. For PhD-level research coding work, the per-task rate gives you a concrete way to compare effort against the posted hourly figure.
