Computational Biology Expert (PhD) | $40-$60/hr Remote
Overview
This remote contractor role lets you put your PhD-level expertise in computational biology to work shaping how AI systems understand and reason about biological data. You'll evaluate and annotate AI outputs across genomics, transcriptomics, and systems biology, helping train next-generation models through rigorous real-world feedback. If you're passionate about bridging biology and machine learning while working flexibly, this is your opportunity.
What You'll Do7
- 1Use your deep biology knowledge to assess, annotate, and benchmark AI systems in practical computational biology scenarios.
- 2Evaluate the correctness, relevance, and overall performance of AI-generated results in areas like genomics, transcriptomics, and systems biology.
- 3Apply advanced analytical reasoning to critique scientific workflows and pipelines, pinpointing both strengths and opportunities for improvement.
- 4Partner with cross-functional teams, offering biological context and feedback to refine AI model behavior.
- 5Clearly document your findings with scientific justification, turning observations into actionable insights.
- 6Explain complex biological concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders through written and verbal communication.
- 7Stay current on emerging trends in computational biology, bioinformatics, and machine learning for biology.
Requirements8
- 1A PhD in Biology, Bioinformatics, or a closely related field — or equivalent research experience.
- 2Hands-on experience with data-driven biological research and computational analysis workflows using Python, R, or Bash.
- 3Familiarity with scientific tools like BWA, GATK, STAR, Salmon, Seurat, or Scanpy is highly valued.
- 4Deep understanding of genomics, transcriptomics, structural biology, or systems biology preferred.
- 5Strong scientific reasoning, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- 6Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to articulate findings and collaborate effectively in a remote setting.
- 7Comfort working independently and contributing to distributed teams.
- 8Preferred: experience evaluating AI/ML or LLMs in a biology context; hands-on work with NGS pipelines, CRISPR workflows, AlphaFold, or PyMOL; and published research or open-source contributions.
Who Should Apply
This role is ideal for a PhD-level computational biologist who's eager to apply their domain expertise beyond traditional research — directly influencing how AI models learn biology. You should be comfortable scripting in Python or Bash, have deep working knowledge of genomics or transcriptomics, and enjoy critically evaluating scientific outputs. If you're detail-oriented, communicate clearly, and want to work remotely while shaping the frontier of AI in biology, you'll fit right in.
