Coding Manager / HIM Coding Leader | $80/hr Remote
Overview
This role blends healthcare operations with cutting-edge AI. You'll oversee coding teams and directly train next-generation AI systems by evaluating their coding accuracy. It's a unique opportunity to shape how artificial intelligence handles ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT/HCPCS, and DRG assignments, all while leading real-world coding operations remotely.
What You'll Do9
- 1Lead and supervise professional fee (profee) and/or facility inpatient coding teams to ensure high accuracy, productivity, and full compliance with coding guidelines.
- 2Review AI-generated code assignments — including diagnoses, procedures, and DRG groupings — assessing correctness and adherence to regulations.
- 3Perform regular coding quality audits and deliver constructive feedback to both human coders and AI models to drive continuous improvement.
- 4Track and report key performance indicators such as coder output, error rates, unbilled accounts, and claim denials linked to coding mistakes.
- 5Manage coding work queues and distribution to meet turnaround time targets and maintain smooth workflows.
- 6Ensure all coding practices follow Official Coding Guidelines, CMS rules, and payer-specific policies.
- 7Develop and deliver coding education and compliance training sessions for coding staff.
- 8Collaborate with CDI, billing, and compliance teams to resolve revenue integrity issues and improve coding accuracy.
- 9Annotate AI-generated coding outputs with structured feedback to support the training of autonomous coding systems.
Requirements6
- 1Minimum 5 years of medical coding experience, with at least 2 years in a managerial or HIM leadership role.
- 2Deep mastery of ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT/HCPCS, and Official Coding Guidelines, plus hands-on expertise in profee and/or inpatient facility coding with DRG assignment.
- 3Proven experience conducting coding audits and building quality improvement initiatives.
- 4Fluency in coding software such as 3M, Nuance, Optum360, or TruCode, and comfort with major EHR platforms.
- 5Excellent written and verbal English communication skills, with a meticulous eye for detail and ability to spot errors and compliance risks.
- 6Preferred credentials: CPC, CCS, RHIA, or RHIT; experience with CAC tools and NLP-based coding platforms is a plus.
