Chemistry Research Collaborator (Part-time) | $80-$110/hr Remote
Overview
This part-time role invites accomplished chemistry researchers to help build the next generation of AI systems capable of scientific reasoning. You'll work alongside a top-tier AI lab, reviewing cutting-edge literature and crafting challenging problems that test model understanding in areas like organic synthesis, catalysis, and computational chemistry. It's a unique chance for PhD-level chemists to apply deep domain expertise to advance frontier AI.
What You'll Do5
- 1Evaluate recent chemistry publications for accuracy, originality, and impact on the field.
- 2Design and critique complex chemistry questions that push the limits of AI model reasoning, covering topics such as retrosynthesis, mechanism prediction, and spectral interpretation.
- 3Assess model outputs across a range of tasks — including literature-based reasoning, computational chemistry, and physical chemistry — to identify strengths and weaknesses.
- 4Flag subtle errors or gaps in model responses that an experienced researcher would catch immediately, helping to refine the AI's performance.
- 5Work closely with a small program team and other senior contributors to ensure high-quality data and continuous improvement.
Requirements6
- 1A strong publication record, including first-author or co-first-author papers in leading journals such as JACS, Nature Chemistry, Science, or Angewandte Chemie.
- 2A PhD or postdoctoral training from a globally recognized institution (top-20) in chemistry or a related STEM field.
- 3Recognition through competitive fellowships like NSF GRFP, Hertz, Sloan, Dreyfus, Searle, or similar awards.
- 4Demonstrated innovation via issued patents, a spin-out company, or named grants as a Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator.
- 5Current or recent hands-on research experience as a PhD candidate, postdoc, faculty member, principal scientist, or industry researcher.
- 6Outstanding senior PhD students and recent graduates with deep research impact are strongly encouraged to apply — depth matters more than years of experience.
Who Should Apply
The ideal candidate is a highly accomplished chemistry researcher — likely at the PhD or postdoctoral level — with a proven track record of publishing in top-tier journals and a passion for applying their science to AI development. You have a sharp eye for nuance and can immediately spot the kinds of errors a seasoned chemist would notice. You value flexibility and want to contribute part-time from anywhere, working on problems that sit at the intersection of chemistry and artificial intelligence.
Salary Insight
Compensation ranges from $80 to $110 per hour, depending on research seniority and credentials.
Application Tip
In your application, highlight 2-3 specific research achievements that demonstrate your deep reasoning in areas like organic synthesis or computational chemistry. Also, mention any prior experience evaluating or working with AI models — even if informal — to show you understand the context of the role.
