Definition
An AI code reviewer evaluates generated code for correctness, security, and maintainability, then writes the explanation a model or a data pipeline can learn from. The work combines code review with technical writing. Strong reviewers can name the failing line, the missing test, and the safer alternative.
Skills that matter
- Multi-language fluency
- Debugging
- Test design
- Technical writing
AI code review is not a normal pull-request review. You judge generated code against a specification, identify correctness and security failures, and explain the fix in writing. Some projects ask you to write the test that exposes the bug. Others ask you to compare two solutions and justify the better one.
What the assessment tests#
- Correctness: does the code do what the prompt asks on normal and edge inputs?
- Debugging: can you find the failing line and explain why it fails?
- Security: do you spot injection, unsafe deserialization, or missing authorization?
- Test design: can you write a case that exposes the defect?
- Communication: is the review specific enough for another engineer to act on?
What AI code review pays#
Generalist software and coding tracks run about $25–$75/hr. Mercor’s expert band reaches $50–$150/hr. Terac publishes software engineering review at $60–$200/hr and ML engineering up to $220/hr. The top of the band requires a specialist credential or a demonstrated senior engineering record, not just familiarity with a language.
| Track | Typical band | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Generalist coding evaluation | $25–$75/hr | Language breadth, sample quality |
| Senior software review | $60–$150/hr | System design, security depth |
| ML engineering review | $80–$220/hr | Research or production ML record |
| Expert network review | $100–$200/hr | Credential, client demand, selectivity |
How to qualify#
Most platforms give you a coding task or a code review exercise. Passing means more than a working solution: the review has to explain the tradeoff, the failure mode, and the test. LeetCode practice helps with the coding gate. It does not prepare you for the written review, which is the part most engineers underestimate.
Before applying, write two code reviews of generated code: one correctness bug and one security bug. Keep each under 200 words and name the exact line. That sample is closer to the paid work than a solved algorithm problem.
Platforms that hire#
Terac runs the highest published engineering bands through its expert networks. Mercor places senior engineers and scientists with frontier labs. AfterQuery pays software and specialist contributors on hourly and per-task projects. Micro1 and Turing also hire engineering evaluators, though their published bands sit lower. AI Code Reviewer jobs, answered
How much do AI code reviewers make?
Generalist coding evaluation runs $25–$75/hr. Senior software review reaches $60–$150/hr, and specialist engineering networks publish $60–$200/hr, with ML engineering up to $220/hr. The rate tracks the credential and the review depth, not the number of languages on your resume.
Do I need to be a senior engineer?
For the top bands, yes. Generalist coding tracks accept mid-level engineers who can pass a coding assessment. Expert networks and frontier-lab projects usually want a senior record, a specialist credential, or a demonstrated portfolio of reviews.
What does the assessment ask?
Expect a coding task plus a review exercise. The coding task tests correctness. The review exercise tests whether you can name the failing line, explain the risk, and propose a test. Some platforms add a system-design or security scenario.
Can I do AI code review part-time?
Yes. Most platforms engage contractors per project, and many engineering reviewers work 10–20 hours a week. Check the contract for minimum availability and time-zone overlap before you commit.
