Performance Engineer (C++, Python, Rust) | $70-$110/hr Remote
Overview
We're looking for a Performance Engineer with deep expertise in low-level systems optimization to help train and evaluate cutting-edge Large Language Models. In this fully remote role, you'll use C++, Python, and Rust to design performance-engineering tasks, write solutions, and build evaluation rubrics that improve the quality of training data for frontier AI systems. This is a 40-hour-per-week W-2 contract (placed at a leading AI lab) with a competitive hourly rate.
What You'll Do5
- 1Work alongside research and engineering teams to identify and close knowledge gaps in systems-level optimization, compiler engineering, and runtime performance.
- 2Create challenging, domain-specific tasks across multiple performance engineering specializations, and write accurate, well-structured solutions.
- 3Evaluate performance engineering tasks and solutions, providing clear, written technical feedback to improve model training data.
- 4Develop detailed guidelines and rubrics to assess the quality of systems design for AI workloads.
- 5Collaborate with other subject-matter experts to ensure consistency and accuracy across all training data.
Requirements5
- 1At least 2 years of professional experience in performance engineering, systems programming, or low-level optimization.
- 2Hands-on expertise in at least one of C++, Python, or Rust, with working familiarity across the others strongly preferred.
- 3A demonstrable track record of measurable performance improvements on production systems (e.g., latency reduction, throughput gains, memory footprint optimization).
- 4Clear career progression and the ability to commit reliably to 40 hours per week during weekdays.
- 5Strong written communication skills to explain complex technical decisions clearly and concisely.
Who Should Apply
This role is perfect for a performance engineer or systems programmer who loves optimizing low-level code and wants to directly shape how next-generation AI models learn. You should enjoy collaborating with both research and engineering teams, designing evaluation tasks, and providing clear technical feedback. If you're passionate about performance tuning and can dedicate full-time hours to a remote engagement, this is a great opportunity.
Salary Insight
$70.00 – $110.00 per hour, W-2 employment.
Application Tip
When applying, showcase specific projects where you made measurable performance gains—for example, reducing latency by X% or increasing throughput by Y%. Also include examples of work with low-level languages like C++ or Rust, and any experience evaluating or designing technical tasks or rubrics.
