Italian Sonic Audit Specialist Remote Work
Listing checked September 18, 2026 · pay as published by Mercor
Overview
Mercor seeks Italian speakers to audit AI training data for Amazon Sonic collections, not to create it. You will review two audit sets: multilingual transcription and forced alignment. In the first, you compare recorded speech against an annotator's transcription, apply fixed error codes, pass or fail the work, and write a short rationale. The second asks you to check word-level audio segments, verify start and end timestamps, and fix boundaries by splitting, merging, adding, or removing segments when the machine mislabeled them. Each task runs at 5.00 audit hours, so the focus stays on careful judgment rather than speed.
What You'll Do8
- 1Listen to Italian speech recordings and read the transcription an annotator prepared.
- 2Judge if the transcription matches what the speaker said, then assign pass or fail using the project's error codes.
- 3Write a short rationale for each decision, placing critical errors first so readers see why a task failed.
- 4Review word-level audio segments from the forced alignment collection and confirm each start and end timestamp.
- 5Check that reference text matches the spoken form in every segment.
- 6Correct machine errors by adjusting boundaries, splitting or merging segments, inserting missing words, or deleting empty segments.
- 7Tag every relevant error code when a task contains multiple issues, not only the first one found.
- 8Finish a calibration phase before moving to production work.
Requirements6
- 1Native or near-native command of Italian as used in Italy. You either grew up in a region where that variety dominates or have five or more years of residence there.
- 2Strong English reading and writing, enough to follow a detailed rulebook and produce clear audit notes.
- 3Ability to apply a written rubric with the same standard across hundreds of decisions instead of relying on instinct.
- 4Sharp listening skills to tell similar sounds apart, find word boundaries in continuous speech, and separate true acoustic ambiguity from annotator mistakes.
- 5Prior transcription, subtitling, localization, linguistic annotation, or QA work gives you a clear edge.
- 6Bonus experience with AI data annotation, model evaluation, phonetics, linguistics, audio editing, or waveform tools.
Who Should Apply
The strongest fit is a native Italian speaker from Italy who has spent years around the language, reads English well, and enjoys applying a fixed rubric to audio and text. Someone with transcription, subtitling, localization, annotation, or QA experience will pick up the error codes faster. This role is less suitable for people who want to generate content, work fast without written standards, or rely on personal judgment over the rulebook. Candidates often score lower when they cannot show five or more years of residence in an Italian-speaking region or when their English writing is too weak for detailed rationales. Another common miss is treating the task as general translation instead of timestamp, boundary, and error-code review.
Salary Insight
The pay is $39.50 per hour. For hourly language audit work that requires native Italian, English rulebook reading, and precise audio judgment, this rate matches the specialized nature of the project. Mercor lists the engagement as hourly, so your earnings track the audit hours you complete.

Application Tip
State your Italian region and years of residence near the top of your application, then add one example of applying a fixed rubric to transcription, alignment, or annotation work. Name any tools you use for audio review, such as waveform editors, and mention error codes or QA standards you have followed. That evidence helps reviewers see fit before they read your full work history.
